The saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover. That may be true but in comics, it’s usually a good starting point. Usually in this column, I tend to look at the writing of comics more than the…

This Saturday is an event at The Dragon in Guelph Ontario that will have Jeff Lemire, Scott Chandler, Marco Rudy and Jesse Jacobs. I plan attending to get a few books signed and a sketch or two so watch for…
This week Comic Culture hosts Chris Owen and Walter Durajlija talk about the success of the DC reboot, Marvel’s Fear Itself, DC’s new gay superhero, printing defects, the Montreal Comic Con and in honor of the Montreal Con we have…
A trailer has been released for Batman: Year One animated direct to DVD feature film. Based on the clip I have two impressions: it’s very close to the comic and I don’t care Batman’s voice. But that’s just me.
This will be the first of 2 or 3 Montreal Comic Con posts, as it was a busy weekend. The con was well attended and well organized, but not without some bumps in the road. First I should make it…
Alongside the other relaunched DC titles is a new series featuring the Red Lanterns in their own book, in addition to the other three Green Lantern series. Red Lanterns is penned by Peter Milligan, with the first issue having been released last week alongside Green Lantern.
Pia Guerra was at the Montreal Comiccon this past weekend (Sept 17 and Sept 18). I had a brief opportunity to chat with her after she completed a sketch for me. She is probably most known as the artist for…
The panel began with each creator giving a brief introduction of themselves and their careers. Sergio did most of his introduction in French. Stan Sakai began with a bit of Japanese and then English. Stan noted that issue 141 of…
Freshly returned from Montreal Comiccon 2011 my head is still full of crowds, books and art. My focus here is the collected edition market at the show: hardcovers, trade paperbacks, graphic novels. First off this was a comic centric show…
It’s no secret that Guy Davis is one of the best artists working in comics today. He’s well known for his legendary run on BPRD as well as one of the most underrated series of the 90s, Sandman Mystery Theatre.…
Last week the Dark Angel Saga continued with issue 15 of Remender's rendition of the X-Force, bringing the team's dream of saving Worthington closer to its conclusion. What they found once they returned was instead their worst nightmare staring them coldly in the eyes. This week we're taking a look at the latest issue of Uncanny X-Force.
Now that fall is upon us, images are popping up on the interwebs of the toys that will be coming to Canadian retail before Christmas and early 2012. As you know from my other columns, I collect toys. G.I. Joe…

I received a distressing piece of news Sept. 15: Showcase, one of Canada’s specialty networks, opted not to renew the television series Almost Heroes for a second season. This, considering it was one of my favourite shows within the last year, quickly prompted me to tweet my displeasure like any other self-respecting new media junkie and classify it as a blunder on par with Fox cancelling any show that was ever worthwhile. Please see Firefly, Dollhouse and Arrested Development for further reference. At this point I imagine, though, that you’re questioning what it is I’m blabbering about.
This past weekend I toured a couple of comic shops. One was my local favourite (Blue Beetle), the other was a comic shop in downtown T.O. I thought I would just check things out. See what was in stock. Get…
Batman #139, DC Comics, April 1961 I’ve honestly had this book on my “future undervalued’ file for at least 6 months and have just never pulled the trigger and posted it. In light of the new Batgirl #1 comic released…
I kind of sat on this one for a little bit; surprisingly no one really wrote much about it. Rob Liefeld was prompted on twitter to explain the status of his Kirkman penned Killraven series which lead to a back…
This week Comic Culture hosts Chris Owen and Walter Durajlija talk about Hulk vs Dracula, all the new superhero DVD’s hitting the stores, the Wolverine Gold Team, a Walking Dead talk show, DC’s New 52, the top 10 reasons comic…
An interesting video from the CBC archives about Memory Lane Books, opened May 1967 in Toronto by George Henderson. This predates Harry Kremer’s Now & Then Books by four years. A really great interview. Henderson felt comfortable opening a comic…
Last night I got a chance to check out Morgan Spurlock’s (Supersize Me) new documentary Comic Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope at the Toronto International Film Festival. The doc was filmed at the 2010 San Diego International Comic Con and…
This week we're also taking a look at another of the new DC 52 number ones, this time the Emerald Archer himself, Green Arrow. Coming off a tumultuous year in the life of Oliver Queen, the series has been rebooted, taking Oliver Queen back to a location he's not been in some time. Intrigued? Then read forth.
