Collected New 52

First off every title is getting a collection of at least six issues, so DC clearly has no plans to cancel any of their New 52 titles within the first six months. Since they required books to be done well in advance I'd hazard a guess they already have at least six issues ready to go.

DC has announced the New 52 collected edition schedule, May to November 2012.  It’s a bit long so I wasn’t going to quote it but decided to anyway.

First off every title is getting a collection of at least six issues, so DC clearly has no plans to cancel any of their New 52 titles within the first six months.  Since they required books to be done well in advance I’d hazard a guess they already have at least six issues ready to go.

What’s interesting to me is the choice of hardcover versus trade paperback.  Of the 52 collected editions 11 are hardcovers, all front line characters and members of The Justice League.  Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman.  I’m shocked that Aquaman gets a hardcover, but that could be more to do with the creative team than the character.  No Wonder Woman listed, but that’s probably an error.

Hardcovers are getting an $8-10 premium, which is the standard.  Unfortunately the pricing makes no sense.  Hardcovers are priced $22.99 and $24.99, 144 pages to 200 pages.  Trade paperbacks are priced $14.99 and $16.99, with Blue Beetle TP for $22.99 which I’m guessing is a typo.  Page counts 144 to 192.  For some reason they vary from collecting six issues to eight issues.  Overall not a lot of consistency.

No hardcovers getting the trade paperback treatment within the six months listed, so if you’re holding out on the hardcovers it may be a long wait.  As I scrolled the list I thought for sure I’d see a Justice League trade paperback in November, since months after its May hardcover release.

  1. “I’m shocked that Aquaman gets a hardcover”

I am not shocked that Aquaman is gettting a hardcover collected edition. Geoff Johns is doing some great work with Aquaman.

The first couple issues have him more based on land, which is how it was done during the 70’s and 80’s. The inclusion of the “Trench” finally gives Aquaman someone to fight, that only he is capable of fighting.

I’ve enjoyed the first couple issues of Aquaman and can’t wait to see where it leads. It is was what Aquaman needed to breathe new life to the character.

I didn’t plan on buying Aquaman when #1 came out, but I bought it on an impulse and I am glad I did.

  2. Given their recent cancellations of trade paperbacks such as the fifth R.E.B.E.L.s collection, I would take these announcements with a grain of salt.

I would expect Batwoman to be amended to include #0.

Announcing collections for everything continues to show some kind of support for the entire line but watch for some collections to be cancelled before they are solicited or after the fact when they get the order numbers from retailers – as I’m going to tell you that very few people will be ordering say, Static Shock.

One thing that surprises me is how long they are making people wait for the “fourth week” collections of titles such as Francis Manapul’s The Flash. Issue 7 ships in March and fans are not going to see a collected edition in stores until November? That’s really dumb. Get the headline books out there faster so retailers can sell them.

  3. The other surprise on this list is Catwoman coming out as TPB. I thought with the exposure Catwoman was getting lately that book would’ve been released as HC. I thinks the sales will be strong for the collected edition of Catwoman.

  4. I’ll be picking up for sure:

    Animal Man
    Catwoman
    Batgirl
    Batwoman

Some I will look at before deciding to buy:
    All Batmans
    Nightwing
    Justice League Dark
    Demon Knights

Pretty sizable list I think. I wish they would all be HC and TP to give readers a choice, but what can you do?

  5. Actually, I’m happy as long as they finish off the rest of the Stephanie Brown Batgirl series in paperback.

  6. DCs SOP for a long time now has been 8-12 months between hardcover and softcover release. Nothing new there.
