Vortex Comics

What’s wrong with this picture, our friend Spider going out on bike rides in his short shorts, basking in the warm summertime sunshine of Down Under, while I’m triple layered up here in the Great White North, praying my car starts on a Polar Vortex inspired minus -22 Celsius morning? The answer is everything is wrong up here, and all is well down there.

The big comic book topic in Canada this past week has been if and when the United States imposes tariffs on all Canadian goods sold to the U.S. Will vintage comic books fall into this net? I’ve talked with a few Canadian eBay sellers of vintage comics and they are very concerned, I’m concerned too but I’m optimistic that some negotiations can avert what I see as something detrimental to both countries. We don’t have to wait long to find out as President Trump is being sworn in today. I’m wondering if any President ever collected comics? My money would be on George W. Bush, maybe Obama.

The good news is its hard to find time to stress over such matters when you have so much work to do digging through thousands of comics looking for lots for our next icecollectibes eBay auction. Out of the pile I picked Batman’s Strangest Cases Treasury as our Cover of the Week. I know treasuries are a pain in the ass to collect, but you have to admit you get a nice big piece of cover art. Here you get Neal Adams art and Bernie Wrightson inks, I like the cover layout. We have over 100 treasuries lined up for auction, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the prices our listings have been getting, I’ll admit I thought only a few of the usual suspect treasuries were the only ones that pulled money, nice to see I was wring.

Neal Adams takes our Splash Page of the Week with this two page sequence from Green Lantern #82. I couldn’t decide which of these two pages to pick so I chickened out and picked the both of them. I think the page on the right would have benefitted from some color.

Our ad of the week, also from Green Lantern #82 reminded me of an old Norn Macdonald bit where he laments on the fact that nobody knows the names of the other 11 astronauts that walked on the moon (I knew two, remembering Buzz Aldrin was Neil Armstrong’s partner on Apollo 11). Why does nobody care about one of civilization’s greatest achievements? With all this in mind I’m wondering how well that ad for the Apollo astronaut poster sold and I wonder if it is a collectible today?

Our weekly icecollectibles eBay auctions keep getting bigger, last night over 170 lots closed fast and furious. Speaking of Treasury Editions, I thought the Spectacular Spider-Man #1, Marvel’s first from 1974 went light at $67, advantage buyer!
