I think the problem with Superman is that he’s just too powerful. DC has been trying to revitalize Superman since the late 80s… They had John Byrne rework him, he grew long hair, he split into 4 different Supermen, he became vulnerable but nothing really stuck. Sort of like the dream team in the Olympics… it was awesome to see Jordon and Barkley on the same team… but the team was just too strong which made for boring games.
Superman was great for the times but unfortunately, the trend toward darker, meaner characters continues…
I know there’s been a handful of stories where Supes has a ‘moment’ and turns evil for a while. But what if the greatest villains in the DCU captured him together – and planted a bunch of fake memories in his mind of how Earth discovered Krypton decades ago and how our world leaders all fired their weapons of mass distraction at once, destroying it and causing the origin moment we all remember, killing everyone he loved. It could be revealed to him as the ‘truth’ that’s been hidden from him since he arrived – and we’ve been exploiting him from the jump. Supes would then vow to avenge Krypton by destroying Earth and all living people upon it. Bad Supes would be a genuine threat for the remaining Justice League members… how the hell do you fight that?
We better call the Cheetah.
Charlie’s right, Supes is too strong – to righteous, too boring! Danny’s right too, we need better obstacles than the Cheetah! …and that’s a great idea for a Supes story Danny!
Superman needs a makeover that will stick! Stripping him of powers won’t work I think. Perhaps DC should use him more sparingly and rely on Kent to connect with us.
I remember how much I liked the Bruce Jones run of Hulk. Jones used Hulk sparingly and it worked. I’m not saying its the same thing but… I think you know what I’m saying.
