Covered 365: Day 97

Modern Comics #97 – Quality Comics, May 1950 – Artist: Reed Crandall.

I love the composition of the Modern Comics #97 cover, the art is top notch too.

Whiz #97 caught my attention with it’s strong colors and the innuendo cover to Detective #97 makes it a fan favourite. Strange Tales, Amazing Spider-Man and House of Secrets were all on the short list.

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

  1. I can accept this pick. I did spend some time with it but I gave up on it due to incongruity. It is one thing for our femme fatale to be nonchalant while Blackhawk socks her henchmen – but while a guy with a meat cleaver is coming at her?

As Walt has tried to restrain himself with respect to Charlton romance picks, I have held back on my Jimmy Olsen picks. But #98 has to be Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen. This unnatural cover is the pinnacle of both Olsen weirdness and Superman’s continued encouragement of it. “Approved by the Comics Code Authority” – o-o-o-kay…

    My more traditional picks:
    Amazing Spider-Man
    Brave and the Bold
    Laugh (yowzah!)
    Strange Adventures

  2. I was fully expecting Strange Tales to win this day, but I am relieved that it didn’t. I had my own favorites – Amazing Spider-Man #97 and the great Whiplash cover of Tales of Suspense that Chris referenced in his previous post. I also thought the House of Secrets cover you referenced above was extraordinary. But I also like your choice of the day – it is packed full of action coming from all directions, with the aloof lady in red at its center. Nice choice.
