Covered 365: Day 91

Brave and the Bold #91 – DC Comics, August/September 1970 – Artist: Nick Cardy (pencils and inks).

So I actually spent time looking for some lame blank sketch variant #91 as my April Fools post, when I could not find one I even thought of photo shopping a #91 onto another blank cover. After I realized I didn’t know how to use Photoshop I decided to cut my loses and grab a cheap laugh by writing about my failed attempt. I did have an April Fools post a few years back that I liked and wanted to replicate in a way 🙁

I love this Nick Cardy cover, especially the use of light and dark. If you remember back to Cover #20 Cardy pulled off that same dramatic effect on his Teen Titans cover.

G.I Combat and Tales to Astonish were the others in contention for me.

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

  1. I can see this being the top choice. I would put this neck and neck with G.I. Combat, but that FF is so uber-Kirby that I had to choose it.

Not as much to choose from for #92. I would _not_ choose House of Secrets even though I am guessing ten-to-one that it will be the choice. While the cover is iconic and the book is crazily prized, I am not a fan of the art on an absolute basis, and on a relative basis it is one of Wrightson’s weakest IMHO. There are so many great Wrightson covers, so I find it a shame that all the $$$ go to that one.

Two covers that really struck me were strangely enough (at least for me) very spare romance covers, Girls’ Love Stories and Romantic Adventures (ACG). Of these I would go with Girls’ Love Stories given its original composition, and how that composition manages to say so much – that is my #98 pick.

My other possibilities are Avengers and Our Army at War. Avengers is fantastic but similar my complaint about your #87 pick, too much standing around and moping to earn my pick. Our Army at War is also great but coming off the possibility of G.I. Combat #91, I just can’t make the call.

  2. I really like this cover, but I actually prefer next issue of Brave & the Bold #92 with its Batman horror cover effect. As for today, I thought Action Comics #91 would take the prize, but am certainly not disappointed with the choice.

  3. I just picked up a Superman Comics 91 but even Supes couldn’t take away the glare of the bubble gum pink background… so NOT a contender!
