Covered 365: Day 44

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

Day 44 – Tales to Astonish #44, June 1963, Artist – Jack Kirby.

Is this my 1st Kirby cover? I’ve always marveled at high grade copies of this book, the transitioning blue and the contrasting green. I also love it when a hero makes a strong 1st appearance on a cover.

  1. Today’s choice is a great cover, and hard to argue with its selection, but, as huge fan of Thanos, I was hoping for the Infinity Gauntlet cover of Silver Surfer #44.

  2. Glad to see we agree, and I think that this was my first Kirby pick (or nearly first) as well. As I commented earlier, Kirby’s covers can be somewhat Brio-like in their small figures. Luckily in this case the figures are supposed to be small! Also Kirby channeled his monster experience and really added a third dimension as the creature reaches out of the cover. You are also right about the colors, and I don’t know how much credit we can give to Kirby for these.

#47 slim pickings from my perspective. I am putting Startling on my list because it is a “classic”, but it only get the spot because I found little to choose from. I would put Daredevil way out in front.

    Daredevil
    Jungle
    Marvel Premiere
    Startling
    Superboy
