Covered 365: Day 303

Avengers #303, Marvel Comics, May 1989. Artist: John Buscema.

I’m such a John Buscema fanboy, I saw his cover to Avengers #303 and it sent me back to that late 60s style of his that produced so many classic covers.

Seeing Mark Badger’s cover to Hulk #303 reminded me of Conan on the wheel, I love the massive dose of a pissed-off Hulk that we get on this cover.

Todd McFarlane’s rendering of Sandman on the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #303 is excellent, love the thick late evening blue on the background too.

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

  1. House of Mystery #303 got my vote for today with its all star line-up of Monsters.

Thumbs up to Walt’s selection of the Spidey and HULK covers, but I will have to take pass on the Avengers #303 cover.

I really liked McFarlane’s early run on ASM and the companion “Spider-Man” series, and these covers bring back some of those memories.

Also, I am not a fan of the HULK in his purple speedo phase, but my initial impression of the HULK #303 cover was favorable, although I wasn’t sure why – until I read Walt’s description above, and I agree it does elicit a favorable comparison to Conan.

And I agree with Chris Meli’s nomination of Action #303 for the JOWA – and I think his nomination in yesterday’s comments deserves its on special award.

  2. Well… I do like these covers and would even say of this grouping the McFarlane is best… he really outdid himself and came up with something original… for him. I do think the HoM should have had an honorary submission ( just bot as good as Colan), and that JOWA on the Action is so great I would love having a t-shirt with that image on it!!

  3. Seems like my picks for the day were in the majority but the other two above are acceptable. The Avengers grows on me the more I look at it. The Hulk cover is distinctive but not exactly “my” Hulk. I think we all agree HoM should have been here.

Tomorrow looking very ugly. I’m tempted to go with Uncanny X-Men just for the hologram. But I will go with ASM even if it’s Spidey’s back – it’s still a good cover. I like Batman somewhat but the dumb thought bubbles (is that really what he’s thinking as he realizes that he’s now a ghost?) and the smiling (but dead?) Bruce Wayne.

Detective takes another JOWA for Moldoff’s indescribable Clayface bat-thing. It’s so bad that it’s really, really bad.
