Covered 365: Day 289

Action Comics #289, DC Comics, June 1962. Artist: Curt Swan.

Shwing! Wait! What the heck is going on here? Does Superman have a thing for a woman that looks like his cousin?

Keith Giffen did do some fine work on his Legion of Superheroes run and none finer in my opinion that this cover to Legion #289.

Mike Zeck had a chance at another daily win had the scene not been ruined by the dumb assistant editor gag.

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

  1. I know Meli thought the Action to be the JOWA… while well done, does have a veiled incestuous theme going… but that Cap cover is so whacked I am not sure what the heck is going on there!

  2. Certainly not a very good day. That Action is still the JOWA but that doesn’t mean I don’t like it. I particularly like the background, really nice alien planet landscape. I don’t agree on the Giffen, it is very visually confusing, a tiny figures sitting around cover. Zeck seems to have been unable to draw a bad Captain America cover, but as you say the gag kills it.

#290 not looking any better. As you have turned me 180 degrees on Gollub I will go with Four Color. This is arguably the best one yet, with the bonus “ALL COMICS!” to let you know this is not the cover of a western pulp. Marvel Tales is my runner-up and the book that far better fits my taste in comic book subjects.

Detective is a JOWA candidate given another Moldoff masterpiece including a stupid and reused concept, but I think originality should receive outsize consideration for this award, so instead it goes to Thor for luchadore Thor.
