New Funnies #257, Eastern Color, July 1958, Artist: John Carey.
Man! John Carey’s cover to New Funnies #257 was hard to pick, especially since my yesterday’s pick. Yeah, it has the sky blue but you gotta believe me when I tell you that this cover is all about the sight gag. It’s one of those frozen moments in time pics that nails the moment dead on.
Pep Comics #257 is cover that makes you smile, well it used to make you smile, today you may not want to admit you find it amusing.
John Romita Jr’s cover to Daredevil #257 sticks to you like yesterday’s donut, you have many reasons not to like it but you do.
A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.
While it may not have sounded like it from yesterday Walt… I really do like these colorful funny animal covers… and I bet they look even more vibrant in person! The Pep cover is fun as well and I think the Archie series needs to feel a bit of love as well! The weak cover today is the Romita Jr. cover… I am not saying all his covers are bad but this one doesn’t do it for me… I am sure you really struggled this day with finding examples… and for sure I didn’t make any suggestions so kudos to your choices!
I have made my peace with seeing these funny animal covers as picks, and just say “Thank you sir, may I have another.” There are some that rise above but this certainly isn’t one. The Four Color, Mickey Mouse, and Uncle Scrooge coming up tomorrow are all better in my opinion, but still not enough to earn my pick. That turkey cover from early in the year is way ahead of all of these.
I like the Pep. As Archies go this gets a high mark for the image and colors, but after your soapboxing about #MeToo etc. I thought the cognitive dissonance here would be too much for you.
Daredevil is a fairly crude poster, but I like your assessment. However that just makes me like it more than I should, not enough to make it a pick.
For #258 I just have to go with World’s Finest – that Adams BatManBat is just off the charts. The Giordano back cover is totally pedestrian but it’s not fair to count that, and DC furthermore besmirched Adams’s beautiful work with all of that title nonsense and the text box – at least they had the sense to bring the bat ear in front of the title.
Archie is a runner up as a JOWA-like interesting/creepy/creative idea. Flash is a gory but great piece, not just gratuitous Spawn gore. Uncanny X-Men again gets my love for early Jim Lee, who shows he can do krackle.
The giant hands are back on FF and Iron Man.
JOWA to Action, as everyone’s hero Supes throws Supergirl off Earth because “you’re a failure as Supergirl!”
So your saying Chris, you don’t think the argument for New Funnies holds water despite the color and great sight gag?
Pretty much, Gerald. It’s not like I’m just getting my feet wet with funny animal covers – I’ve been looking at these since I was a wee lad and have seen many. This cover isn’t completely dead in the water, but picks have to do better than just keep their heads above water.
