Covered 365: Day 207

Strange Adventures #207, DC Comics, December 1967. Artist: Neal Adams.

Runaway winner today has to be Neal Adams and his wonderful cover to Strange Adventures #207. Chris noted in the comments yesterday how good Adams is at faces and that comment reminded me of the countless minutes I’d stare at Neal’s wraparound cover to the Muhammad Ali versus Superman treasury edition.

Flash #207 has that jet black background that helps make a great cover, the composition is nice too, this one might have even won it had it not been for Flash’s blurry fleet feet.

Wonder Woman #205 is perhaps the apex of the Wonder Woman tied up era.

Strong contenders included Superman (87), Batman, Tarzan #207 though I think the ape is starting to feel Tarzan up and Donald Duck made me laugh because that’s exactly the kind of day I had yesterday!

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

  1. You’re lucky, Deadman. Most ghosts don’t end up with such a cool costume when they get killed.

  2. Your on a real winners streak with the covers Walt! I am a bit perplexed tho… despite this being a superb cover it lacks the story that Chris usually likes! Oh sure… we know our intrepid ( posthumous? ) hero is channeling his best David Janssen to find his killer… but thats the narrative for the whole original series! Why then Chris do you not call this simply great poster art?

  3. I have been challenged for a justification and I will respond. The qualities I am looking for are great art, action, and a story. This lacks somewhat on the action front, but the action is implied. Deadman is poised to act, but how? The possibilities for pursuit are endless. There is no lack of story – this is the story – who is the one-armed man that has made him a fugitive from the living? So definitely not a poster.

#208 not quite so good but some candidates. Given my history with World’s Finest and Dr. Fate, I have to go with World’s Finest. A spectacular concept and Adams execution.

Most won’t agree with Detective but I just really dig this cover. Green Lantern is cool and unusual. Strange Adventures another cool Adams execution but The Eagle is JOWA-worthy.

    Young Romance – huh what?

JOWA to Batman: The Dark Knight.
