Covered 365: Day 203

Amazing Spider-Man #203, Marvel Comics, April 1980. Artist: Frank Miller and Jim Mooney.

I clearly recall trying to hoard Amazing Spider-Man #203, I thought Dazzler was a character on the rise and a very early appearance embedded in the Amazing Spider-Man run was a sure winner I thought. Well, at least Frank Miller and Jim Mooney’s cover is awesome.

I’m one of the biggest Conan fans out there and I always found the comic wanting when compared to the Savage Sword magazine, both in content and on the covers so I’m extra sensitive to spotting worthy Conan covers like the cover to Conan #203.

You know what they should have dome with Wonder Woman? At least for a series of six or seven covers? They should have homaged the covers from the 1942 series on the corresponding covers of the 1987 series. Nonetheless, we again have two strong Wonder Woman covers, this time for issue #203.

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

  1. The Spiderman cover shows a lot of Ditko influence/homage. Nice but not great. The Conan cover is quite simply hideous. I just re-read that Wonder Woman issue about 2 weeks ago and can’t say it was the greatest story ever told but it was certainly “of the time” and well done. Actually it still has a lot of relevance today in our #metoo times. But you aren’t reviewing stories. Still WW gets my vote (is there such a thing as a vote??) Despite the stupid breasts on the girl in the front. In 1972 I probably thought it looked great.

  2. I thought that you would be dazzled by that ASM given your proclivities. Not my idea of a great cover.

Robin is quite simply dead wrong about Conan. I’m With Stupid.

For #204 I see some good covers but my clear favorite is Avengers, which I think I can get behind as “great”. Ever since The Yellow Claw was Spotlighted I have been interested – I never read any of him back in the day.

Betty and Veronica (same year as WW #203?) makes me feel that I was born too late. House of Mystery a good Wrightson. Some might not like Superman, but I think this is a cool Adams cover. I also like the Adams World’s Finest, although I don’t think that it quite makes “great”.

Walt cameo on Daredevil. Classic racist propaganda on Famous Funnies, although without the Schomburg teeth.

    JOWA to Batman.

  3. Not a great day but I think I like Conan the best! Tomorrow I will second Chris in the Avengers cover… thats just about the best Yellow Claw cover I’ve seen and thats compared to both the 50’s rendition as well as Steranko’s which really put the spot light on the previously mothballed super villain.

  4. I think the only weak link to the Conan cover is the updated 80s looking girl, the battle in behind is epic. The words “stupid breasts” should never be used in a row.

  5. They just aren’t old enough to remember Jane Russell and the cross your heart bra Walt!
