Covered 365: Day 176

Doctor Strange #176, Marvel Comics, January 1969, Artist: Gene Colan.

Day #176 was stellar, one of the best in a while, so many good covers to choose from.

My top pick goes to Gene Colan’s masterful work on Doctor Strange #176. I’ve also included pics for Sean Chen’s fantastic Wolverine #176 cover, Girls’ Love #176 which could have easily been the winner had I not picked it, fittingly, for Undervalued Spotlight #365 a while back and Casper #176 simply because it’s fun to look at.

There were so many great covers today I had to leave out Neal Adams’ House of Mystery #176, and John Romita’s two fine covers, Captain America #176 and Strange Tales #176.

A great comic book cover matching each day of the year, 1 through 365. Please chime in with your favourite corresponding cover, from any era.

  1. Would like to have seen both 175 and 176 of Gene Colan’s Doc Strange take the last two spots! Magical Gene Colan and Tom Palmer collaborations!

  2. No doubt about this one – Dr. Strange #176 is a beautiful Colan cover with color, flow, movement and drama. Since moving to the full Dr. Strange title in issue #169, both the Adkins and Colan covers in this run have been really strong, with an absolute classic coming tomorrow in issue #177.

There were several other strong covers including those mentioned by Walt, with Captain America #176 securing my runner-up position with a really strong image.

  3. While I loved Ditko on Strange, Colan is right up there. His streaky movement panels have always left me in awe. One of my favorite sequences is where Strange and Clea are moving thru the Times Square crowd in New Years Eve. Its really masterful!

  4. Better than the previous day. Of course the pick should have been that Girls’ Love Stories. If you held The Single Highest Graded copy of that issue, without those color-breaking creases and bumped corners, I would say your judgement is necessarily unimpeachable and people should always listen to your opinions about covers and whatnot. Doctor Strange is good too although I don’t dig Clea’s unnatural shoulders. The Casper is fun and has good colors but since I don’t get it I can’t say “great”.
