I was sitting in The Comicdenn looking at the Fantastic Four story arc from issue #84 to 87.The issues featured a great Dr. Doom story by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, with great Joe Sinnott inks. What a great story to relaunch the Fantastic Four on the Big screen!

When I began my quest to rebuild my comic book collection, the world of collecting had changed in a big way. Walt at Big B Comics in Hamilton was a big help in getting me reacquainted with grading and CGC. EBay and the internet made it possible to get anything you wanted, in any shape you could afford, on any given day.

Joe is, without a doubt, most recognized for his amazing contribution to the Fantastic Four run with Jack Kirby. Joe inked issue #5 featuring Doctor Doom and was scheduled to stay on the book inking Kirby. He left after inking a few pages of #6 not to return until #44 which was the introduction to the Inhumans saga followed by the Galactus Trilogy and what I call the best 50 issue run in the history of comics.

Where Jack Kirby was explosive chaos, and John Romita beautiful women and great storytelling, nobody ever drew like Gene Colan. Before or since. Gene's artwork moved with a graceful flowing motion. His characters looked like members of your family, or your friend's family. His mastery of light and shadow was exquisite in its flawless perspective.

Now my Mom and Dad knew I had ordered some comics by mail order and weren't too pleased about it. They thought I spent $20, when in actuality I had spent $200 or so in US funds. The package was about 10 inches high and had been strapped together between cardboard and wrapped again in brown wrapping paper. The corners were somewhat torn and slightly blunted but the contents were intact.

A funny thing happened when I opened the package from Robert Bell containing the comic bags I ordered. There was a new updated price list from the one I received about 3 months earlier. Amazing Spider-Man #1 was now $40! It had doubled in value since the last list.

Spectacular Spider-Man #1, for those not familiar with it, was Marvel's first entry into not only a Spider-Man spin off, but in a B&W magazine format aimed at a more mature market.

So being firmly bitten by the comic book bug at age 10, and thoroughly exhausting my friends and family getting any back issues, I began to take note of the little adds that offered back issues. For some reason the add by Robert Bell and Michael J. Rogofsky stood out to me more than most. I sent my request, plus 25 cents (Cdn) to far off New York.
